Most wine regions in Australia are fair drive from the closet capital, Mclaren Vale is a 30 minute short drive from Adelaide.

The first stop should be Blessed Cheese, this cafe has great coffee and cakes, we tried the Slow Cooked Pork and Scallops, then a short drive up to Oxenberry Wines where Jared will give you the first taste of the Reds this region is famed for, the selection here includes the Star of Greece Shiraz, Oxenberry is owned by the Scarpontoni family and the Cellar door is a short walk from the original 1840 homestead.

Next stop is Hugh Hamilton where you can sample wines that can only be brought at the cellar door or via their wine club, on our visit we were hosted by Kim, who introduced us to their Shiraz cordial for those alcohol free days.

At Pertaringa we tried the latest Geoff Hardy’s at a cellar door set amongst the gum trees with views and outdoor picnic facilities with platters available, the GSM’s were a highlight here.

Then it was off to a more familiar name for most Aussie red wine drinkers, the young energetic team at the cellar door at Wirra Wirra. Lachlan and Kelly offered a great insight into the brand and are helpful for some great tips for the rest of your South Australia experience

There is no shortage of Wineries or food experiences in Mclaren Vale, some disappointed in the taste area, but a tip is seek out the advice of the cellar door staff about the other wineries, a good year for one grape type doesn’t mean the entire vineyard will have a bumper year
